🆕 What's New in CBSE Class 9 2026–27?

The 2026–27 academic session brings significant changes to the Class IX curriculum. The revised structure follows the direction of NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023, with greater emphasis on competencies, conceptual understanding, application, skills and holistic development.

📖 New Class IX Curriculum

The Class IX curriculum has been redesigned to support the Secondary Stage framework aligned with NCF-SE 2023. The emphasis moves beyond memorising information towards conceptual understanding, reasoning, application, problem-solving and competency-based learning.

➗ Mathematics / Mathematics Advanced

Class IX students can study Mathematics or Mathematics Advanced according to the curriculum and options offered by their school. The revised Mathematics curriculum gives greater importance to conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, problem-solving, mathematical modelling, computational thinking, communication and real-life applications.

🛠️ Vocational Education – Kaushal Vikas

Vocational Education (Kaushal Vikas) is included as a mandatory skill subject in the Class IX scheme for 2026–27. It introduces students to skill-based learning and helps connect education with practical activities and the world of work.

🤖 Computational Thinking & Artificial Intelligence

Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence are introduced through compulsory modules in the Class IX–X scheme. Students develop skills such as problem decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, algorithms, data representation and logical problem-solving, along with foundational understanding of AI and its ethical dimensions

👥 Individuals in Society

Individuals in Society is included in the Class IX scheme as part of the broader emphasis on social understanding and holistic development. Students engage with learning that connects the individual with society and encourages awareness of social contexts.

🎨 Art Education

Art Education forms part of the Class IX scheme and supports creative expression, cultural understanding and holistic development. It is assessed at the school level rather than through the same annual examination structure as the major academic subjects.

🏃 Physical Education & Well-being

Physical Education & Well-being is included in the Class IX curriculum to support students’ physical fitness, health, well-being and balanced development. It forms part of the broader holistic approach of the new Secondary Stage curriculum.

Class 9 Social Science Syllabus 2026–27

Social Science remains a core area of the Class IX curriculum. Students study social, historical, geographical, political and economic ideas through the prescribed curriculum and textbooks. The new Secondary Stage approach places greater emphasis on understanding, interpretation, application and connections between concepts.

Class 9 Language Structure 2026–27

Language education has undergone an important change for Class IX in the 2026–27 session. CBSE issued a May 2026 circular aligning its Scheme of Studies with the new NCERT syllabus and stated that, from 1 July 2026, Class IX students will study three languages — R1, R2 and R3 — with at least two being native Indian languages

🗣️ R1 Language

R1 is one of the language levels available under the revised Class IX language structure. According to CBSE’s April 2026 clarification, Hindi, English, Urdu and Kannada may be opted as R1, subject to the applicable scheme and school offerings.

🗣️ R2 Language

R2 is the second language level. CBSE’s language clarification provides for a different language from the one selected as R1, according to the languages available under the applicable scheme

🗣️ Latest Language & R3 Updates

From 1 July 2026, Class IX students are required to study a third language, R3, with at least two of the three languages being native Indian languages. Students choosing a foreign language may take it as the third language only when the other two languages are native Indian languages, or as an additional fourth language.

CBSE’s July 2026 circular list includes Acad-49/2026, “Guidelines for Implementation of Three-Language Scheme from academic Session 2026-27 onwards,” and Acad-46/2026 provides the R3 Language Assessment Framework and Learning Resources for Class IX

📕 English in Class 9

CBSE has discontinued the earlier English Communicative course for students entering Class IX from 2026–27. There is now one English course for Class IX, and the new NCERT textbook Kaveri can be used for both R1 and R2 levels.

Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence form part of the Class IX–X curriculum through compulsory modules. Internal assessment forms an important part of the revised curriculum and supports continuous evaluation of students’ learning and competencies.
