About This Chapter
In this chapter, students explore:
- The concept of force
- Balanced and unbalanced forces
- Net force
- Friction
- Newton’s First Law of Motion
- Newton’s Second Law of Motion
- Newton’s Third Law of Motion
- Forces acting on a system of objects
- Internal and external forces
- Tension
- Applications of Newton’s laws in everyday situations
Important Concepts
Force: A force can affect the motion of an object.
Friction: Friction acts opposite to the direction of motion.
Newton’s First Law: An object remains at rest or continues with constant velocity unless a net force acts on it.
Newton’s Second Law: A net force produces acceleration; acceleration increases with net force and decreases with mass.
Newton’s Third Law: When one object exerts a force on another, the second object simultaneously exerts an equal and opposite force on the first.
Key Formula
F = ma
where:
- F = net force
- m = mass
- a = acceleration
Important Diagrams
- Forces acting on an object
- Balanced and unbalanced forces
- Friction force
- Newton’s First Law illustrations
- Position-time/velocity-time graphs
- Newton’s Second Law experiment
- Newton’s Third Law force pairs
- Rocket launching
- Earth and fruit gravitational forces
- Two boxes connected by a string
- Internal and external forces acting on a system
Practice Questions
The chapter itself ends with 16 “Revise, Reflect, Refine” questions, covering conceptual questions, net force, Newton’s laws, graphs, numerical problems, friction, collisions and applications.
